Internet security centre could be up and running by end of the year The Indian government is to set up an an internet security centre to defend against electronic attacks on business and government organisations. According to the BBC the centre, which could cost up to $20m (£12m), could be operational by the end of 2003.

The Federal Information Technology Ministry in Delhi is handling the project, with the help of US-based computer security organisation, the Cert Co-ordination Centre.

The Indian goverment is also looking at ways to use the country's position as a software developer to move into cyber security, to protect both itself and other countries.

One of the project's organisers told the BBC: "There is concern the world over about cyber attacks. We are doing our bit."
