Encouraging its readers to visit Dutch Radio 538's website at a fixed time on the evening of February 4th, weblogger Retecool.com paralysed the radio's web server and put it out of action for more than an hour.
The content management service provider assisted these enthusiastic visitors by posting a 'script' (a computer program to automate a process) on its website, making access to Radio 538's site faster and easier.
This low-tech 'distributed' denial of service (DoS) attack was evidently in response to a similar action by a Radio 538 presenter during the recent parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, when he targeted political party websites by selecting a particular site and then inciting listeners to visit it en masse at an appointed day and time.
The radio presenter claimed at the time that he was just testing the resilience of these internet sites by pushing their capacity to the limits.
