OSAC Item (Printer Friendly Version) County Web Site Up, Running After Hacker Visit
from Press of Atlantic City Media Group on Wednesday, February 26, 2003

Atlantic County's Web site is back in operation and county officials contend they will prosecute whoever broke in and put anti-government propaganda into the system.

A hacker vandalized the Web site this past weekend, forcing county officials to disable the site for slightly less than 24 hours.

Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson said the site was up and running again by Monday morning.

He also said the county continues to investigate just what happened, along with who is responsible.

"We're looking to find out how it was breeched," Levin-son said. "We have a firewall in place at the present time."

Because the slogans found on the Web site were directed at the U.S. government and not county government, Levinson said the hacker doesn't necessarily have to be local.

"This could have come from anywhere," Levinson said. "It's a concern. It's an annoyance. Even the Pentagon gets hacked. We're in good company."

Whoever is responsible, he said, will be "prosecuted to the fullest extent" of the law.

County officials said authorities might be called in after an in-house investigation.

People logging onto the Web site at:

www.aclink.org

found coarse remarks directed at the U.S. government instead of the usual county directories and information.

County officials said the site has been getting a lot of use lately because it was posting weather alerts and county closings.

County officials feared that disabling the site would shut down Internet access to all schools and libraries in the county. Schools had Internet service Monday.
